A region’s seeds are based on past international performance. Consistently strong regions send some or all of their seeds straight to the Group Stage, whereas other regions receive fewer seeds and/or start in the Play-In Stage.
Twelve (12) teams receive direct invites to the Group Stage:
  • The top three seeds from China (LPL)
  • The top two seeds from South Korea (LCK), Europe (LEC), North America (LCS), and East Asia - Hong Kong, Macau, Taiwan (LMS)

The top four (4) teams from the Play-In Stage, which includes the #3 seed from LCK, LEC, LCS, and LMK, the #2 seed from VCS, and the top team from Brazil (CBLoL), Commonwealth of Independent States (LCL), Japan (LJL), Latain America (LLA), Oceania (OPL), Southeast Asia (LST) and Turkey (TCL), will also move into the Group Stage.

Knock-Out Stage

The top 8 teams from Group Stage advance to the Knock-Out Stage, which encompasses Quarterfinals, Semifinals, and Finals. For this stage, the tournament transitions to a single-elimination bracket with all matches played in a best-of-five format. The team that comes out on top will earn the coveted World Championship title.

Anthem & Opening Ceremony

The World Championship is widely known for its innovative Opening Ceremony, which combines the latest in entertainment, sports, and technology to create iconic, must-see experiences. Such experiences include the augmented reality dragon that flew over the sold-out stadium in Beijing during the 2017 Worlds Opening Ceremony and the creation of K/DA, a virtual K-POP group consisting of four themed League of Legends champions in 2018. The band debuted at the 2018 Worlds Opening Ceremony via an augmented reality performance with the real-life vocalists. K/DA’s leading single, POPSTARS, surpassed 100 million views in one month and topped the Billboard’s World Digital Song Sales chart. True Damage, the 'sequel' to K/DA, performed at the Opening Ceremony for the 2019 World Championship Final.
Released annually since 2014, Riot Games produces a musical anthem leading into Worlds in collaboration with popular musical artists. Over the years, these have included Imagine Dragons, The Glitch Mob, and Against the Current.
